Notes on the origin of the name Duff

Just in case you do not already know - the name Duff is an English corruption of the Gaelic word Dubh - meaning dark or black - and is used as a surname and part of place names in both Ireland and Scotland. The word appears in such items as the fighting knife stuck in the sock of a Scottish Warrior - the Skean Dubh - and is the stem of place names such as Dublin (coming from dubh-linh, which incidentally means black pool).
