2 Railway Terrace, Canbury Park Road

2 Canbury Park Road

The above picture, taken in September 2008, is actually of 2 Canbury Park Road (that is, the hair studio). We are not convinced that 2 Railway Terrace, Canbury Park Road and 2 Canbury Park Road are one and the same. Sight of an early 1900s map does not clarify the situation. The small houses to the left of this pair of shops are terraced and, as with the shops, do back onto the railway embankment carrying the branch line from Kingston to the south-west main line at New Malden. Unlike many Victorian dwellings in Kingston, none of the terraced houses in Canbury Park Road carry name plaques, or at least no longer do. More research into this address is required.

Sarah Duff (neé Huston) died at 2 Railway Terrace, Canbury Park Road, on 1st May 1887. We have yet to determine why she was then at this address, although it is known she was no longer living with her husband, James Duff. Her death certificate records she was a widow, however James did not die until 25th April 1891. We suspect the separation and denial might be due to him suffering from dementia and it is known that in his last years he was living with his son Andrew in Wandsworth.
